FAQ:

How long have I been breeding?
My first litter, the Star Wars litter, was born 8 April 2023.

What is my oldest line?
The Berkshire line, or House line, is descended from the Star Wars litter directly.

When do I breed my female rats, how often and when do they retire?
I breed my does at 5 months old, and ideally they’re 300g+ when I pair them to my chosen buck. A doe will be bred no more than three times, with three or more months between each litter, and retire fully from breeding at 15 months old, if not before; if at any point they seem not to handle pregnancy, L&D, or rearing their young well they’re immediately retired from my program and are rehomed with a pair of their babies.

At what age do I wean and separate babies?
Between 4.5 – 5 weeks maximum, the boys are pulled from their mother and moved to the growup cage where they have a young adult male babysitter to watch over them and teach them good rat manners. Girls stay with their mother and move out of the medbay and into another growout cage where they’re given more space to explore and test their limits!
