One of the main projects of my rattery for the year and beyond is: unravelling what kind of coats hide within the so-called “rexoid” Maryland rats.
I love a good mystery, and I love a difficult project and an opportunity to learn and open myself up to new information. I don’t have hands on experience with the rex coat or lustrous coat before obtaining the rexoid rats from Blue Stone Siamese Rattery in Maryland, US.
Having gone through a few pairings with the rats, I feel I have a better handle on what these type/s of coats look like (in baby form anyway! lol), and look forward to even more guided pairings and delving deeper into unravelling the rexoid specific coats these rats present with.
To that end, I will be keeping one doe and one buck from my current litter, the Star Wars 2 litter (Padmé & Luke), who- when they’re old enough- I intend to linebreed to see what coat types double up. If my suspicions are correct that they’re indeed both lustrous rex, then we should see double rex. If not, it will provide more information for this fantastically fun project. I will continue to keep rats produced from pairings and ethically linebreed them as I see fit, with the advice and guidance of other breeders.
I love to continue to learn, so having a current reason to hyper focus and deep dive into discovering everything I can about rat coat genetics is just fascinating for me. I’m thrilled for the opportunity to work with these rats and their descendants.
